About Stroke

Stroke is the third leading cause of death, behind heart disease and cancer. Each year, about 700,000 people suffer a stroke. About 500,000 of these are first attacks, and 200,000 are recurrent attacks. Stroke killed 275,000 people in 2002 and accounted for about 1 of almost 15 deaths in the United States.

At all ages, 40,000 more women than men have a stroke.
28% of people who suffer a stroke in a given year are under age 65.

On average, someone in the United States suffers a stroke every 45 seconds; every 3.1 minutes someone dies of a stroke.

About 4.7 million stroke survivors (2.3 million men, 2.4 million women) are alive today.

Stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States. 8% of men and 11% of women will have a stroke within six (6) years after a heart attack.

14% of people who have a stroke or TIA will have another within a year.

22% of men and 25% of women who have an initial stroke die within a year.

June, 2005

Michael & Angela speak at the San Diego Marathon dinner banquet. In front of over 1100 people Michael & Angela shared their story of Faith & Hope. Angela was given a standing ovation and we were inspired greatly by the many people that came to speak to her afterward. We also received many letters and e-mails in the days after that let us know when the marathon got tough, they thought of Angela and it gave them the strength to continue and finish. It was also wonderful to put a face to Stroke for many people there did not know the impact of Stroke and its pervasiveness.

March 4th, 2005 - Angela and Michael speak at the American Heart Association Annual Leadership Conference.

February 2005 -  Angela and Michael speak at the Train to End Stroke Kick-off in orange county for the upcoming San Diego Marathon.

July 8th, 2004 - Angela partners with the American Stroke Association to promote stroke awareness. Angela will be working with the American Stroke Association to promote awareness of stroke and the ASA by telling her story through featured articles, television and media events. We will keep you updated.

May 20th, 2004 - We are pleased to announce that Pinnacle Systems has donated its Studio 9 software. Pinnacle is supporting our education and awareness projects that will use video and broadcast media to reach TBI survivors, caregivers and loved ones.

If you have been touched by Angela's story please spread the word to others. TBI is the leading cause of death under age 44. Many more people will be affected this year and in the years to come. Stories such as ours and stories that will not have such a positive outlook. One thing is sure, the lives of everyone who sustains a brain injury and the people close to them will be changed forever. Our goal is to share our testimony of faith and continue to touch people's lives in a positive way.

On an annual basis in the United States:

  • 1.5 million people will sustain a TBI annually
  • 50,000 people will die annually as a result of TBI
  • 80,000 people annually experience the onset of long term disabilities following TBI
  • There are currently 5.3 million Americans living with a disability as a result of TBI
